How We Rank Fractional CMOs
Every ranking on RankedCMO is computed from a transparent, formula-based scoring system. There is no editorial discretion, no pay-to-rank, and no hidden signals. This page explains exactly how it works.
The Composite Score
Each CMO receives a composite ranking score from 0 to 100, calculated from five weighted signals. The formula is:
Ranking Score =
Review Score × 0.35
+ Review Volume × 0.20
+ Profile Completeness × 0.20
+ Verification Status × 0.15
+ Recency of Activity × 0.10
Review Score
35%The recency-weighted average of all approved client reviews across four dimensions: Strategy, Execution, Communication, and ROI. Reviews from the last 6 months carry twice the weight of older reviews, ensuring rankings reflect current performance.
Review Volume
20%The total number of verified reviews, calculated on a logarithmic scale. This means the jump from 0 to 1 review has a larger impact than the jump from 10 to 11. A CMO with 5 strong reviews ranks higher than a CMO with 1 perfect review.
Profile Completeness
20%How thoroughly a CMO has filled out their profile. Profiles with a headline, bio, past experience, competencies, pricing information, and availability details score higher. This rewards CMOs who invest in helping buyers make informed decisions.
Verification Status
15%Whether the CMO has verified their identity. Unclaimed profiles score 0%, claimed profiles score 50%, and fully verified profiles (via LinkedIn OAuth) score 100%. Verification is a trust signal that directly impacts ranking.
Recency of Activity
10%How recently the CMO has been active on the platform. Profiles updated within the last 30 days receive full credit. The score decays linearly to zero over 180 days of inactivity. This keeps the directory fresh and filters out stale listings.
What “Verified” Means
Verification on RankedCMO is an identity check, not a quality endorsement. A verified badge means:
- LinkedIn OAuth — The CMO connected their LinkedIn account, confirming their identity matches their profile.
- Profile Review — Our team reviewed the profile for accuracy and consistency with publicly available information.
- Active Engagement History — At least one confirmed past engagement or client review.
Verification does not mean we endorse the CMO’s work. It means we have confirmed they are who they say they are. The quality signal comes from client reviews.
How Featured Listings Work
Featured listings appear at the top of directory pages with a “Featured” label and a subtle visual distinction. Here is what you need to know:
- Featured is a paid placement. It gives premium visibility but is clearly labeled so buyers can distinguish it from organic rankings.
- Featured does not affect the ranking score. A Featured CMO’s composite score is calculated identically to every other CMO. The ranking algorithm is blind to payment status.
- Featured CMOs still need reviews. Buying a Featured spot does not bypass the review requirements. A Featured CMO with zero reviews will show as such.
How Reviews Are Collected & Validated
Reviews are the backbone of our ranking system. We take review integrity seriously.
Collection
CMOs receive a unique review link they share with past clients. Reviewers do not need an account — the form is public. Every review captures the reviewer’s name, title, company, the engagement type, duration, budget range, and four dimension ratings (Strategy, Execution, Communication, ROI).
Validation
- Every review enters a moderation queue before publication.
- Reviewers must provide a company name and professional title. Anonymous reviews are not accepted.
- Reviews are checked for self-review patterns (same IP, matching email domains, generic language).
- CMOs cannot edit, delete, or hide reviews. They can report reviews they believe are fraudulent.
Rejection Reasons
Reviews may be rejected for: insufficient detail in outcome fields, appearing to be a self-review, containing inappropriate content, or if we cannot verify the reviewer’s identity.
What Gets a CMO Removed
We reserve the right to suspend or remove any CMO profile for the following reasons:
- Fake or incentivized reviews. Soliciting reviews with payment, discounts, or reciprocal arrangements.
- Material misrepresentation. Claiming roles, results, or credentials that are fabricated or significantly exaggerated.
- Extended inactivity. Profiles inactive for over 12 months with no reviews or updates may be unpublished.
- Buyer complaints. Repeated, substantiated complaints about unprofessional behavior or failure to deliver.
