Estimates reflect typical 2026 US market pricing based on RankedCMO's fractional CMO benchmarks. Individual CMO rates vary based on experience, scope, engagement length, and negotiation. Retainers are cash-only; equity arrangements are less common but do occur in pre-seed and seed engagements. Ranges assume monthly retainer engagements of 6+ months.
How the Calculator Works
The calculator combines three inputs to produce a monthly retainer estimate:
1. Base package by engagement level
Four engagement levels reflect typical fractional CMO scope: advisory only (5–10 hrs/wk, $3,500–$8,000/mo), strategy + team leadership (15–20 hrs/wk, $8,000–$15,000/mo), senior fractional (20 hrs/wk premium, $12,000–$20,000/mo), and interim / full ownership (25–40 hrs/wk, $18,000–$35,000/mo).
2. Industry multiplier
Regulated verticals (FinTech, HealthTech, Medical Device, Healthcare) apply a 15–30% premium reflecting the specialized bench. B2B SaaS runs at a ~15% premium. Traditional segments (Professional Services, Manufacturing, AEC, Veterinary, Non-Profit) discount 10–35% below the base range.
3. Company stage multiplier
Pre-revenue and seed discount 20–35% off the base range. Series A prices near market average. Series B/C, Growth, and Enterprise pay 15–30% premium reflecting the seniority and operational complexity typical at those stages.
Combining the multipliers produces a monthly retainer range. The calculator then translates that to hourly, annualized, and comparison against a full-time CMO's total compensation ($325K–$650K).

Frequently Asked Questions
How accurate is the fractional CMO cost calculator?▾
The estimates reflect typical 2026 US market pricing based on RankedCMO's fractional CMO benchmarks and 100+ profile data points across industries and stages. Individual CMO rates vary within these ranges based on experience, scope, engagement length, and negotiation. Use the estimate as a starting budget range, then compare against 3–5 candidates in your target industry to calibrate. The ranges are directionally reliable for planning purposes.
Why do industries have different multipliers in the calculator?▾
Regulated industries (FinTech, HealthTech, Medical Device, Healthcare) command a 15–30% premium because compliance and domain knowledge are specialized skillsets with smaller talent benches. B2B SaaS commands a ~15% premium because the market is competitive and PLG/ABM playbook expertise is in high demand. Traditional or less-competitive segments (professional services, manufacturing, AEC, veterinary, non-profit) run 10–35% below market average.
Why do company stages affect fractional CMO pricing?▾
Two reasons: (1) Later-stage companies typically have more complex marketing operations, larger teams to lead, and higher accountability to boards and investors — commanding senior CMOs at premium rates; (2) Later-stage companies also have larger budgets, so demand for senior operators is concentrated. Pre-revenue and seed engagements often use equity plus reduced cash retainer, which the calculator doesn't model.
What's not included in the calculator's estimate?▾
The calculator estimates the fractional CMO's monthly retainer only. Not included: (1) Equity, which is more common at pre-seed and seed stages; (2) Tool and vendor costs (marketing software, contractors, agencies) that the CMO manages but doesn't personally invoice; (3) Travel or on-site premium (typically 10–15% for weekly in-person availability); (4) Bonus or success fees, which are uncommon but occasionally structured for specific engagements.
How do I use this estimate to actually hire?▾
Use the estimate as a budget range for initial candidate conversations. When you contact a fractional CMO, ask about their monthly retainer for your specific stage and scope. Compare 3–5 candidates against the calculator's range — anyone significantly above the high end should justify the premium (specialized expertise, recent exit, etc.); anyone significantly below should be vetted for seniority match. See our full how to hire a fractional CMO guide for the complete process.
Should I hire the cheapest fractional CMO?▾
Almost never. Fractional CMO pricing correlates with seniority, and hiring below-market on retainer usually means you're getting below-CMO-level experience. The right question is 'which fractional CMO delivers the strongest ROI for my stage,' not 'which is cheapest.' A $12K/month senior fractional CMO who drives $200K in incremental pipeline is a better investment than a $6K/month junior operator who executes tactics without moving revenue.
